Oral care starts at the earliest age. Paedodontics or pediatric dentistry treats children’s teeth from their birth to the end of the adolescence. The main goal is the prevention and treatment of tooth decay on deciduous and permanent teeth.

As working with kids requires a special approach and methods, and the first experience of the dental clinic is really important, we make a special effort to make their first visit a happy memory. This makes kids fearless in future treatments and lets them learn the importance of dental care from an early age. We reward displays of bravery to give our youngest patients encouragement to always reach beyond their limits.

We foster an individual psychological approach to each of the young patients, and so successfully eliminate all fear and other potential problems in the early stage of the child’s development.
The foundations of pediatric dentistry are:

  • fissure sealing
  • topical fluoridation
  • treatment of tooth decay
  • education on oral hygiene and the importance of regular examinations

Fissure sealing

Fissures are grooves on the crown of the tooth located between tooth cusps. Being hard to reach, they are a fertile ground for bacteria and a potential spot for tooth decay. Before fissure sealing, the spot is cleaned and then a composite material is applied, allowing for a long lasting, high degree of prevention.

Topical fluoridation

Fluoridation is a procedure in which fluoride is applied to the permanent teeth of children. It comes in liquid, gel or varnish form. This is a completely painless method that prevents the forming of tooth decay on children’s teeth, as it hinders the bacteria growth and enhances the saliva amount and quality, making teeth more resilient.

Treatment of tooth decay

  • the examination and medical history are a base for preparing the therapy plan and advising on the child’s oral cavity care
  • all procedures are completely painless because of the anesthetics specially adjusted for kids
  • decaying tooth is filled with aesthetic composite fill and polished

Education on proper oral hygiene and the importance of regular examinations

The best time for a preventive examination is at the age of one year and until the third year at the latest. The goal is to get to know the patient, to create a bond and trust, and to additionally educate parents about the deciduous teeth importance and the prevention of tooth decay.

Those early examinations are incredibly important as they can discover possible decay, detect orthodontic anomalies and remove bad habits (pacifiers, bottles). Examinations should be repeated every 6 months unless the dentist instructs otherwise.

By the third year, all 20 deciduous teeth should be in place. Permanent teeth grow by absorbing the roots of the deciduous ones, making them fall out by themselves. in some cases, the dentist has to remove the deciduous teeth.
Believing that one should not care for deciduous teeth as they will fall out and be replaced by permanent ones is not correct. They are important not only for chewing function in kids but also as they help develop the jaw and the formation of the bite. Deciduous teeth taken out too early can lead to permanent teeth deformation, requiring orthodontic therapy to correct their position.

Bad oral hygiene can lead to a series of malformations in kids. Pain or destroyed teeth can complicate digestion and slow the child’s growth, it can lead to speech impediments, and the child’s tongue can push new teeth outside the bite area. It is important not to give sweetened beverages before bedtime or during the night, as sleeping reduces the saliva generation and sugar remains on the surface of teeth for longer periods, leading to the bacterial growth and tooth decay.

When permanent teeth begin to grow, between the ages of 6 and 7, it is recommended to preventively visit the orthodontist. Based on the examination and an x-ray of the jaw we can observe the ratio of deciduous against permanent teeth, spot possible anomalies or bad habits such as tongue thrusting, mouth breathing, etc. We can also decide the course of the therapy if it is needed and schedule future check-ups. Early prevention is the key for quick and successful correction of all the irregularities of jaw and teeth.

Let us work together to give your kids the best possible care from the earliest age.
